Klallam territory is located on the north coast of the Olympic Peninsula in Washington and across the Strait of Juan de Fuca around Becher Bay on the south coast of Vancouver Island, including a few adjacent small islands. The handful of remaining speakers all live in the United States. The indigenous name for Klallam is Nəxʷsƛ̕ay̕əmúcən.
Klallam was formerly lumped together with what is now called Northern Straits Salish under the name Straits Salish. Although closely related, it is now considered a distinct language.
Klallam is a Salishan language.
