Coast Tsimshian is spoken in Northwestern British Columbia especially in the Skeena River drainage and at New Metlakatla in Alaska.
Coast Tsimshian people call their own language /sm?álkax/ "the real language". Sm'algax is the practical spelling now in general use. The term Tsimshian is an anglicization of /ts'msyan/ "inside the Skeena River", the term used by the Coast Tsimshian and Southern Tsimshian to refer to themselves.
Coast Tsimshian is a Tsimshianic language.
